Chubu Electric Power Miraiz began supplying power on April 15, 2025, to Fujita Health University and its hospital from a 517kWDC solar carport installed in the staff parking lot. The scheme is expected to expand to about 4MWDC covering around 12% of the facilities’ power consumption by 2027.
Part of the expanded capacity will comprise additional 861kWDC and 386kWDC carport installations scheduled to be commissioned in October 2026 and in 2027, respectively. The remainder will come from a 2.3MWDC floating solar power plant, which Chubu Electric Power will build on an agricultural reservoir adjacent to the facilities and owned by Toyoake City in Aichi Prefecture. The floating power plant is expected to come online in June 2025.
The project has been developed under an agreement to ensure continuity of medical care during disasters signed between Chubu Electric Power Miraiz, the facilities’ operator Fujita Academy, and Toyoake City in January 2023. Once fully operational, the solar power plants in combination with existing backup generators are expected to allow the hospital to operate uninterrupted for at least seven days during power outages.
According to Nikkei’s Mega Solar Business, a portion of the scheme is structured via leasing rather than as an on-site PPA.
The scheme, involving dual use of existing space, shows Chubu Electric Power Miraiz’s efforts to maximize solar power generation amid a tightening supply of land suitable for larger-scale solar projects. It follows a 15-company hybrid on- and off-site PPA set for 2026 commissioning, under which the company will install power plants at each of the participating companies’ facilities, with each participant acting as a generator, offtaker, or both.
Correction (April 17, 2025): The previous version of this article incorrectly indicated that Chubu Electric Power Miraiz will build the floating solar power plant.
