Daihatsu Diesel Manufacturing started self-wheeling power from its Moriyama Second Factory to its Moriyama First Factory on July 1, 2024, Digital Grid, which supports Daihatsu Diesel in operating the scheme, announced on the same day.

As part of the scheme, a 1.47MW (DC) solar power plant expected to generate approximately 1.94 GWh per year was built on Daihatsu Diesel Manufacturing Moroyama Second Factory’s rooftop in Moriyama City, Shiga Prefecture. A portion of the generated power is used on-site and the excess power is self-wheeled through the power grid to the company’s Moriyama First Factory located approximately 3 km away.

While the self-wheeling scheme allows companies to move power between their facilities through the grid without the involvement of a retailer, it requires them to submit supply and demand plans and be responsible for imbalances. Daihatsu Diesel Manufacturing outsourced that responsibility and risk to Digital Grid.

In addition to supporting companies with operating self-wheeling schemes, the company also operates a platform connecting PPA providers with offtakers. The Japan Energy Hub corporate PPA database shows that, among others, Sony Group and Ricoh used it to secure PPAs.

Dahiatsu Diesel Manufacturing is a company publicly traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange that primarily manufactures marine diesel engines and co-generation diesel engines.
