JERA and Toho Gas will jointly develop 659.9MW Units 7 and 8 at Chita Thermal Power Station in Chita City, Aichi Prefecture, the two companies announced on December 23, 2024. They will aim to commission the two units in FY2029.

According to the statement, the two companies plan to establish a joint venture 75% owned by JERA Power Investment, a wholly-owned subsidiary of JERA, and 25% owned by Toho Gas within FY2024. The joint venture will be in charge of developing the two LNG-fired combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGT) for which JERA submitted a draft of environmental impact assessment in October 2024.

The companies plan to commission the first of the two units, Unit 7, in October 2029. Unit 8 is expected to follow in January 2030.

Chita Thermal Power Station was first commissioned in 1966. At its peak, it had six units totaling 3.97GW. With Units 1 through 4 having been decommissioned in March 2022, the power plant currently has two operational units, Units 5 and 6, both an 854MW CCGT. As Unit 5 is set to be decommissioned in FY2026, the power plant will have three operational units (6 through 8) and a total capacity of 2.17GW once the new units are commissioned.
