Lightsource BP entered the Japanese market through the acquisition of a 15MWDC solar project in Hokkaido, the solar developer wholly-owned by BP announced on February 12, 2025.
“The entry into Japan is an important step in Lightsource bp’s broader APAC growth strategy and lays the groundwork for further growth in the region,” said the company’s statement. “Lightsource bp’s entry into Japan marks its growth from 19 to 20 global markets,” it continued.
Details about the project including its development status and whether the project will be operated under the FIT/FIP subsidy scheme have not been disclosed.
According to its statement, Lightsource BP has an 8GW pipeline in the APAC region, accounting for approximately 14% of its global pipeline. Among other markets, it is active in Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, and South Korea.
Lightsource BP was founded as Lightsource Renewable Energy in 2010. It was rebranded following an acquisition of a 43% stake by BP in 2017, which was later increased to just under 50%. In October 2024, BP announced it acquired the remaining shares in the company, making it its wholly-owned subsidiary.
The announcement of Lightsource BP’s entry into Japan follows its parent’s announcement of planning to merge its offshore wind business with TEPCO and Chubu Electric Power’s joint venture JERA to form JERA Nex BP by September 2025.
