Megmilk Snow Brand, one of Japan’s largest dairy companies, and Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions (ESS) signed a 10-year virtual PPA, the two companies announced on November 7, 2024.
As part of the PPA, from FY2025 until FY2034, Toshiba ESS will aggregate excess capacity (approximately 2.9MWAC) not utilized at warehouses and other facilities with rooftop solar power plants to be developed by an undisclosed generator and sell the related non-fossil certificates to Megmilk Snow Brand. The dairy company plans to use the certificates to lower the carbon footprint of its Kawagoe Factory in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture.
The aggregated power, expected to total approximately 3.8GWh/year, will be sold by Toshiba ESS in the wholesale market while Megmilk Snow Brand will continue to procure power from its retailer. “We will bundle renewable electricity from multiple rooftop solar plants, forecast generation, create and submit generation plans, and also cover imbalance costs,” said Toshiba ESS’ statement.
According to the Japan Energy Hub PPA database, this is Megmilk Snow Brand’s first disclosed PPA. Toshiba ESS, on the other hand, has been involved in a number of other, primarily physical, PPAs as an aggregator.
