Tokyo Gas completed a 97.8MW gas-fired power plant in Sodegaura City, Chiba Prefecture, the company announced on March 27, 2025.
“Sodegaura Power Plant” consists of 10 Wärtsilä engines, 9.78MW each, and is located within Sodegaura LNG Terminal’s premises. It was jointly built by the company’s engineering arm Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions and Shimizu Corporation.
“Flexible output adjustment is possible by taking advantage of the gas engine’s high start-up responsiveness,” said Tokyo Gas about the asset. The company plans to use the power plant to “respond to market volatility caused by fluctuations in renewable energy output and electricity demand, and to contribute to grid stabilization and the spread of renewable energy.”
Separately from the new peaker, Tokyo Gas is also planning to build a 1.95GW LNG-fired power plant at the terminal through its wholly-owned subsidiary Chiba-Sodegaura Power. The subsidiary, previously a 50:50 joint venture between Tokyo Gas and Kyushu Electric Power until 2022, submitted a draft environmental assessment report for the “Chiba Sodegaura Natural Gas Power Plant” in November 2024 and plans to gradually commission it from FY2029.
