On January 7, 2025, Yamato Holdings established Yamato Energy Management, a wholly-owned subsidiary that will be responsible for securing renewable energy supply for Yamato Transport.

According to the statement, the subsidiary, which plans to start business in FY2025, will procure renewable power directly from assets including solar and hydro power plants, as well as from the wholesale market, and supply the power to Yamato group companies including Yamato Transport, which will use the power for charging electric delivery trucks. Yamato Energy Management will also be in charge of investing in and managing solar power plants owned by the group.

Yamato partnered with JERA which, through its wholly-owned subsidiary JERA Cross, will help Yamato Energy Management with balancing supply and demand and aggregating its assets. Additionally, according to JERA’s statement, in the future, the two companies plan to collaborate on 24/7 carbon-free power supply.

In FY2023, 37.3% of Yamato Group’s consumption was covered by renewable power, including 211.11GWh purchased through a retailer, 1.99GWh procured through PPAs, and 1.26GWh generated using the company’s solar power plants. The group aims to own 810 solar power plants and have 70% of its power consumption come from renewable sources by 2030.

Yamato’s decision to establish an in-house power retailer to manage renewable power procurement comes just months after the convenience store and supermarket giant Seven & i Holdings established Seven & i Energy Management, which it plans to use for similar purposes starting from April 2025.
