Kyushu Leasing Service-owned KLI will establish a subsidiary, KLI New Energy LLC, focused on expanding into feed-in-premium (FIP) and grid-scale battery storage projects later this month, with Kyuden Mirai Energy taking an undisclosed stake, the company said on May 8, 2025.
KLI New Energy’s first project will be a 2MW/8.2MWh BESS facility on KLI-owned land in Kama City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Power X will supply battery systems and Nishimu Electronics Industries will provide the energy management system (EMS). Construction is slated to begin this month, with commissioning planned for March 2026. Once operational, Kyuden Mirai Energy will aggregate the asset, trading its power in the wholesale, balancing, and capacity markets.
The partnership between the Kyushu Leasing Service and Kyushu Electric Power subsidiaries comes as the former is implementing its strategies to expand its environment business and enter new markets set in its 2027 mid-term management plan.
This marks KLI’s first foray into market-exposed power infrastructure. However, the company already operates 6.4MW of solar assets under the feed-in-tariff (FIT) scheme, primarily in Kyushu. Its partner Kyuden Mirai Energy handles Kyushu EPCO Group’s renewable projects. It has a 1.3GW portfolio of operational and under development solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, and hydro projects.
