Between May 2024 and April 2025, the renewable power promotion surcharge will be 3.49 yen per kWh

The 2023 renewable power promotion surcharge was low due to high wholesale market price ballooning the avoidable cost from 1.4 trillion yen the year before to 3.6 trillion yen. With that exception, the surcharge has been over 3 yen per kWh since May 2021.

Data period

May 2012-April 2024

Remarks

  • The renewable power promotion surcharge was introduced in FY2012 to recoup the extra cost of the FIT subsidy scheme and is the same regardless of the T&D area
  • It is calculated as the difference between the total cost of the FIT scheme and the total avoidable cost (i.e. what it would have cost to procure the same volume of power from the wholesale market) plus administration costs of running the FIT scheme, divided by the estimated power generation volume to get a per kWh amount
  • It is revised annually for the period between May and the next April (e.g. the 2012 price indicated on the chart was applicable between May 2012 and April 2013)
