Kansai Electric Power will discontinue the use of the 1.2GW Ako Power Station on July 31, 2025, the company announced on October 16, 2024.

By the time they are decommissioned, the power plant in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, will have reached nearly 38 years of service. Both of its 600MW oil-fired units were commissioned in 1987, in September and December, respectively. When announcing the planned decommissioning, Kansai EPCO cited the power plant’s aging and changes in business environment among the reasons.

Kansai EPCO’s statement said it will consider using the land currently occupied by Ako Power Station for the development of “zero-carbon power source” in the long term, without specifying further details.

Once Ako Power Station goes offline, Kansai EPCO’s sole remaining oil-fired power plant will be Gobo Power Station in Gobo City, Wakayama Prefecture. While the power plant has three 600MW units, one of those was taken out of service in 2019.
