On April 22, 2025, the European Energy Exchange (EEX) introduce order book trading for all Japan power futures in addition to its existing trade registration service, the exchange said on March 4, 2025. The new service will be restricted to 4-6 p.m. Japan time each trading day.

“By introducing order book trading for those two hours when both domestic and international traders are most active on this market, we will pool liquidity and thus facilitate further growth,” said EEX’s Chief Commercial Officer Steffen Koehler. According to Koehler, the service will provide lead to increased transparency in the market and provide real-time pricing reference.

The existing trade registration service allows EEX members to register their over-the-counter trades for clearing and settlement through the exchange. The new service will clear trades in real times based on submitted bids and asks.

EEX has seen rapid growth in Japan since it started offering power futures for the Tokyo and Kansai TSO areas in 2020. Most recently, the annual traded volume grew nearly 300% from 18.3TWh in 2023 to 72.9TWh. In February 2025, the exchange broadened its offering by introducing Japan power options.
