Erex joins a growing list of companies entering the grid-scale battery storage market.

Erex will build its first grid-scale battery storage project, the company announced on September 4, 2025.

According to the statement, the 2MW/8MWh facility will be located on a 1,887m2 site in Kushima City, Miyazaki Prefecture. Erex plans to commission it in Q2 FY2026 and tasked GreenEnergy Plus with construction.

Once operational, Erex will aggregate the project in-house, participating in the wholesale, balancing, and capacity markets. “We will leverage the trading expertise cultivated in the more than 20 years since we entered the power retail business,” said the company.

When announcing quarterly results in August 2025, the company said it was considering investing about 500 million yen into a battery storage asset, likely referring to this project.

The entry into grid-scale storage is part of Erex’s new strategy to broaden its activities from biomass generation and power trading into aggregation. Under the new strategy, it earlier partnered with JR East and Global Engineering, also receiving investment from the former and acquiring a stake in the latter. During the quarterly presentation, the company said it is also in discussions about large-scale projects.
