JAPEX began construction of its first extra high-voltage grid-scale battery storage asset, the 20MW/106MWh JAPEX Tomakomai Power Storage Station at its Hokkaido Office in Tomakomai City on October 6, 2025, the company announced on the same day.
According to the statement, the facility is expected to be commissioned in the fall of 2027. Kyocera Communication Systems will handle engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC). PowerX will supply 39 Mega Power 2700A containerized BESS units. JAPEX plans to participate with the asset in the wholesale, balancing, and capacity markets.
The project was awarded a 1.86 billion yen subsidy through METI’s FY2024 scheme for grid-scale storage projects, which covers up to one-half of eligible capital expenditures for 10MW and larger projects.
JAPEX Tomakomai Power Storage Station follows the company’s first grid-scale storage facility, the 2MW/6MWh JAPEX Mihama Power Storage Station built at its research center in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture. JFE Engineering handled the high-voltage asset’s EPC and its construction was supported by a 416 million yen subsidy provided by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
The oil and gas exploration and production company has also recently been active in renewable generation asset development. It invested in multiple biomass projects, such as the 50MW Tahara in Aichi Prefecture and the 75MW Chofu in Yamaguchi Prefecture, and solar power plants, including a 390kW asset in Niigata used for self-wheeling.
