Matsuyama Mikan Energy LLC, a joint venture between Shikoku Electric Power and CHC Japan, began commercial operation of the 12MW/35.8MWh Matsuyama Power Storage Station in Ehime Prefecture on August 1, 2025. The project is Shikoku TSO area’s and the utility’s first operational extra-high voltage grid-connected BESS and CHC’s first in Japan.
According to the statement, construction of the project, first announced in June 2023, began in September 2023. It was supported by a 1.1 billion yen subsidy under METI’s supplemental FY2022 budget program for the support of grid-scale storage, which was expected to cover approximately 30% of capital expenditures.
The facility is located on the site of the former coal-fired 141MW Matsuyama Thermal Power Station, adjacent to the 2MW Matsuyama Solar Power Plant operated by Shikoku EPCO.
Separately from the newly operational storage facility in its home region, Shikoku EPCO has been involved in another METI-subsidized project, the 10MW/30MWh Hokkaido Sapporo Power Storage Station, through its subsidiary Yonden Engineering.
CHC also established a Japan-focused platform partnered with alternative investment firm Stonepeak to establish a Japan-focused platform, which won capacity contracts for nine projects totaling 479MW across Japan’s first two long-term decarbonization auctions.
