Port Inc. expects its grid-scale battery storage business, currently in a pilot phase, to be profitable from its first fiscal year and will decide by March 2026 whether to ramp up investment in the sector, the company announced on December 22, 2025.

According to the statement, in its original forecasts, the company expected the assets it commissioned earlier this year to generate a loss in their first, partial fiscal year of operation (FY2025). “However, the launch has been smoother than expected,” Port said. “We have gained confidence as we move toward commercialization,” it added.

The company is currently sourcing land for new projects to enable “speedy large-scale entry and gain an early-mover advantage” in case it firms its decision to proceed with expanding the business unit. If it does so, it plans to make grid-scale battery storage one of its key growth pillars and target developing 10 high-voltage BESS assets in FY2026.

As part of the trial, Port invested 1 billion yen in three 2MW/8MWh projects in Gunma Prefecture, two of which were commissioned in June and one in October 2025. It tasked GridBeyond and Second Foundation with their aggregation and, in addition to arbitraging energy in the wholesale market, began participating with two of the assets in the balancing market in October and December 2025, respectively.

Port is among a growing list of companies, such as Yachiyo Green Energy, JALCO Holdings, and AI Storm, that are positioning grid-scale battery storage as a key component of their growth.
