Star Seeds will acquire its first grid-scale battery storage project site, a 1.99MW/8MWh high-voltage facility under development in Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture, from JPN ENERGY Integrated System, it announced on June 12, 2025.

According to the statement, JPN ENERGY has already received a response to its grid connection application from Chubu Electric Power Grid saying the project can be connected within about six months after payment of construction costs. The asset transfer, scheduled for June 17, 2025, includes the interconnection rights and a 952m2 project site.

The fashion retailer that branched out into storage is currently in discussions about potential partnerships with KDDI Group’s Eneres, which is likely to aggregate the asset once operational, and with the Hiroshima-based Daisun, which may handle engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) and operation and maintenance (O&M).

The batteries are expected to be provided by China-based Robestec Energy, which earlier this month partnered with Star Seeds to supply 400MWh of BESS for 50 Star Seeds projects.

Star Seeds did not disclose the project acquisition cost or construction timeline. However, it said it would use a portion of the 1.35 billion yen raised through stock warrants that it re-allocated to grid-scale storage for use between June 2025 and February 2026. It also re-allocated a separate 57 million yen from new stock issuance to BESS for use between July 2025 and February 2026, suggesting early 2026 COD for the project.

Separately from its discussions with Eneres and Daisun and partnership with Robestec, in March 2025, Star Seeds also entered into a tie-up with hospital and nursing home operator Sumirekai Group to develop storage facilities on its idle land.
