Tohoku Electric Power has acquired an undisclosed economic interest in the operational Green Power Sumita Tono Wind Farm, the company announced on April 16, 2025.
The 113.4MW power plant located in Sumita Town and Tono City in Iwate Prefecture was commissioned in May 2023. It consists of 27 Vestas turbines, 4.2MW each, and was built by Shimizu Corporation. All power generated by the power plant is sold to Tohoku Electric Power Network under a 20-year feed-in-tariff (FIT) contract.
METI data shows the asset was FIT-certified in FY2016 when 20kW or larger onshore wind projects were offered 22 yen per kWh and has a contract valid until May 2043. It also suggests the power plant is operated with its combined output limited to about 99.8MW.
The power plant is owned by the special purpose company (SPC) Green Power Sumita Tono LLC. Green Power Investment, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Green Power Renewable Holdings No. 2 LLC, held full economic interest in the asset prior to Tohoku EPCO’s investment. The company has also been in charge of its operation and maintenance (O&M).
Green Power Investment and its affiliates have over 250MW of operational wind FIT/FIP capacity with more, including a project won in Japan’s third offshore wind auction as part of a JERA-led consortium, under development. Looking to expand, the company established its second, 61 billion yen wind-focused fund earlier this year.
Tohoku EPCO aims to develop over 2GW of renewable capacity by early 2030s, primarily through wind projects.
