Yonezawa Biomass Energy LLC commissioned the 7.1MW Yonezawa Biomass Power Plant in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, on December 1, 2025, one of the facility’s owners, Takuma, announced on January 22, 2026.
According to the statement, the power plant is expected to generate about 58GWh annually, with the output being sold under the feed-in-tariff (FIT) scheme. It will be primarily fueled using wood chips made from thinned wood sourced within the prefecture. METI data shows the project was FIT-certified in FY2021 when 2MW and larger biomass power plants using such fuel were offered 32 yen per kWh for 20 years.
Yonezawa Biomass Power Plant was developed by Saitama Prefecture-based Iwahori, which signed an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for the asset with Takuma. The companies agreed in 2024 to establish the joint special purpose company, Yonezawa Biomass Energy LLC, as part of the engineering company’s efforts to expand from providing services to directly participating in projects.
The original developer maintains a 65% stake in Yonezawa Biomass Energy LLC, with Takuma holding the remaining 35%. METI data lists another 7.1MW biomass project by Iwahori in Yonezawa City, though its current status is unclear.
