Mitsubishi Estate, Tokyo Century, and Itochu, through Fukuokaken Chikuzencho Chikudensho LLC, began construction of a 67MW/230MWh grid-scale battery storage project in Chikuzen Town, Fukuoka Prefecture, the companies announced on June 1, 2026.

According to the statement, the asset is expected to be commissioned in January 2028. Mitsubishi Estate is managing the project and Shizen Engineering, a subsidiary of the project’s early-stage developer Shizen Energy, is in charge of engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC). The facility will be built on a 26,000m2 site and use 102 PowerX Mega Power 2500 units supplied via Itochu under its partnership with the battery system manufacturer.

Fukuoka Chikuzen Power Storage Station was selected to receive METI’s FY2025 subsidy for promoting grid-scale battery storage, which, for 10MW and larger lithium-ion projects, covers up to one-half of eligible capital expenditures. Data released by the Sustainable Open Innovation Initiative (SII), the organization administering the program, shows it was awarded 4 billion yen, making it the only project to date awarded at the scheme’s maximum amount.

The real estate developer first invested in the grid-scale battery storage sector in 2024, when it participated in a public-private fund initiated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. It took a more active role in the industry in 2025, when it secured a 20% stake in the Mitsubishi HC Capital Energy-led 25MW/50MWh Kamiosatsu Power Storage Station, which is currently under construction in Hokkaido.

Both Tokyo Century and Itochu also invested in the fund and hold direct stakes in operational projects.
