Himawari Green Energy will build its first grid-scale battery storage facility, a 2MW/8MWh asset in Isumi City, Chiba Prefecture, parent company The Chiba Bank announced on August 26, 2026.
According to the statement, the project is expected to be commissioned in April 2027. The facility will operate on a merchant basis. Its planned aggregator, equipment supplier, and construction contractor were not disclosed.
The Chiba Bank established Himawari Green Energy, its wholly-owned energy-focused subsidiary, in April 2023. In the same year, the unit completed a 1.2MW solar power plant in Asahi City and began supplying its parent under a self-wheeling arrangement. In 2024, it signed an intra-group offsite corporate PPA sleeved by TEPCO Energy Partner to supply the bank’s main branch from a 700kW asset it developed in Choshi City.
Himawari Green Energy follows other regional banks’ energy subsidiaries, including San-in Godo Bank’s Gogin Energy, Higo Bank’s KS Energy, Tokushima Taisho Bank’s Tokugin Tomony Link Up, and Chugin Financial Group’s Chugin Energy, in entering grid-scale battery storage.
