Star Seeds will enter the grid-scale storage market through a partnership with China-based battery manufacturer Robestec Energy, it announced on June 3, 2025.

Under the partnership, the two companies will work together on developing BESS projects in Japan and building a one-stop solution for import, installation, and maintenance of battery equipment. Star Seeds will also aim to procure 400MWh of equipment from Robestec for 50 projects.

According to the statement, separately from grid-scale storage, Star Seeds is also considering adding batteries to its factories, logistics centers, and other facilities for peak cutting, power cost reduction, and business continuity during outages. The company plans to invest 7.5 billion yen in its battery business over the next three years, with 1.5 billion yen allocated for initial setup.

Originally a fashion retailer, Star Seeds set grid-scale storage as the next pillar of its growth strategy. The company previously said it was in discussions with the Hiroshima-based solar company Daisun and renewable asset aggregator ENERES about potential BESS-related tie-ups. It also entered into a partnership with Sumirekai Group to develop storage facilities on unutilized land owned by the hospital and nursing home operator.

Robestec was founded in 2019 and, as of the end of 2024, delivered over 3GWh of storage solutions.
