Fifteen companies in western Shizuoka Prefecture partnered with Chubu Electric Power Miraiz on its “Enshu Decarbonization Project,” which aims to maximize installed solar capacity by utilizing a hybrid on- and off-site PPA scheme, the power retailer announced on January 31, 2025.
According to the statement, because power needs to be consumed on the premises as the same time as it is generated in the case of an on-site PPA, “depending on the customer’s electricity usage, there are cases where the installation space on the roof, etc. cannot be fully utilized.” The project aims to prevent underutilization of available space by supplying excess power from one participating company to another through an off-site PPA.
Approximately 5MW of solar are expected to be installed at the 15 participating companies’ facilities between May 2025 and the end of 2026. The power plants are expected to generate approximately 6GWh per year once all are operational.
Based on their power consumption patterns, four of the participating companies (Suzuki, Somic Ishikawa, Yamaha Motor, Rohm Hamamatsu) will only procure excess power while eight will only supply excess power (Aizen, IO Industry, Enshu, Cataler, Kurabe, Koken Kogyo, Koritu, and Koyama Seiki). The remaining three will both procure and supply excess power (DOWA Metanix, Hamamatsu Photonics, Yamaha).
The Japan Energy Hub PPA database shows some of the participating companies including Yamaha and Somic Ishikawa previously signed other PPAs too. The former was revealed to be one of the parties in a multi-offtaker virtual PPA with Aoyama Kogen Wind Farm and the latter announced two smaller projects in 2023.
