GS Yuasa is a battery system manufacturer increasingly active in the grid-scale storage segment.

GS Yuasa and Sustech are developing a joint 1.3MW/4.2MWh grid-scale battery storage project in Maibara City, Shiga Prefecture, the companies announced on January 27, 2026. They plan to begin commercial operation of the asset in September 2026.

According to the statement, the facility will consist of two containerized GS Yuasa BESS units, with trading optimization handled using Sustech’s ELIC platform. The battery manufacturer aims to gather insights for product development and know-how on project operation through the initiative. Among other things, it plans to verify the impact of high-frequency operation associated with participation in the primary balancing market on cells and other equipment.

Sustech, founded in June 2021, is a developer and renewable energy services company that began activities as a registered aggregator in August 2024. Prior to working with GS Yuasa, the company has also tied up with RS Asset Management to trial the operation of its assets using ELIC.

The Kyoto-based GS Yuasa manufactures batteries for a variety of applications. It has recently been increasingly active in supplying its equipment to grid-scale battery storage projects, including ML Power and Tohoku Electric Power’s 1.96MW/7.46MWh Yatogo Power Storage Station and the upcoming Yonden Engineering-led 10MW/30MWh Hokkaido Sapporo Power Storage Station.
