Nippon Chikudenchi completed the 2MW/8.1MWh NC Karatsu Ochicho Power Storage Station, its first grid-scale BESS facility in Kyushu, the company announced on October 14, 2025.
According to the statement, the company began trial operation of the facility in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, on October 10, 2025, but did not provide a planned COD. Construction was handled by Kraftia, formerly Kyudenko, and the asset uses storage systems with CATL batteries supplied by Daihen.
Ahead of the project’s completion, Nippon Chikudenchi and Karatsu City signed an agreement on using the facility to provide emergency power supply during disasters. Earlier this month and in June 2025, respectively, the developer formed similar partnerships with Hashima City in Gifu Prefecture and Uki City in Kumamoto Prefecture. It is planning to operate 2MW/8.1MWh grid-scale BESS assets in both.
Separately from its tie-ups with municipalities, Nippon Chikudenchi also partnered with Sun Village to develop 100MW/400MWh of grid-scale BESS, including the company’s first operational asset, which was commissioned in Aichi Prefecture in May 2025, and with Kraftia on Kyushu area projects. It aims to expand its portfolio to 20 facilities by the end of 2025 and to 80 by the end of 2026.
