Renova submitted the environmental impact assessment methodology for an up to 280MW onshore wind project in Higashidori Village, Aomori Prefecture, to METI and relevant local governments on October 20, 2025.
According to the document, the company plans to install 32 to 51 turbines, 4.2MW to 8MW each, across a 2,367ha site in the village. It plans to begin construction in March 2029, targeting January 2034 completion. Start of commercial operation is currently scheduled for August 2034 following brief trial operations.
The project’s environmental impact assessment process was launched in April 2024. At the time, Renova planned a smaller, 168MW to 240MW wind farm.
With Aomori Prefecture’s Shimokita Peninsula offering favorable wind conditions, several major wind projects, such as the 51MW Futamata Wind Power Plant and the 50MW Eurus Noheji Wind Farm already operate in the area. Others, including Cosmo Eco Power’s up to 200MW Shimokita Wind Farm and Eurus Energy Holdings’ up to 162MW Odanosawa III are currently undergoing the environmental impact assessment.
Renova owns a stake in the 147MW Abukuma wind farm in Fukushima jointly with several partners and is building the 54.6MW Reihoku-Amakusa in Kumamoto, its first as lead developer. It has multiple other projects under development, including the up to 288MW Embetsu-Shosambetsu and the up to 105.6MW Yurihonjo-Iwaki. The company targets adding 400MW of operational and under-construction domestic onshore wind capacity to its portfolio by FY2030.
