Sumitomo Corporation, Tokyo Gas, and Hokuriku Electric Power commissioned the 112MW Sendaiko Biomass Power Plant in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, in November 2025, the companies announced on November 28, 2025.
According to the statement, the power plant is expected to generate about 800GWh annually using fuels derived from thinned wood, sawdust, and low-grade timber and procured by Sumitomo. METI data shows the project was certified under the feed-in-tariff (FIT) scheme in FY2016 when general woody biomass assets were offered 24 yen per kWh for 20 years.
Sendaiko Biomass Power Plant is located on a 3.4ha site within Sendai Shiogama Port. Sumitomo Corporation, which led development, expected the total investment in the project to reach about 90 billion yen. JGC Corporation handled engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC). Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions was in charge of owner’s engineering and will provide operation and maintenance (O&M) services for the asset.
Tokyo Gas, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Prominet Power, and Hokuriku Electric Power joined the project in 2022, when they each acquired a 25% economic interest in Sendaiko Biomass Power LLC. Sumitomo Corporation continues to own 45% of the special purpose company (SPC), with its unit Sumitomo Corporation Tohoku holding the remaining 5%.
Sumitomo owns stakes in three other biomass plants with a combined capacity of 175MW through its subsidiary Summit Energy. Tokyo Gas has also invested in multiple other projects, including the 75MW Ichihara Yawatafuto. Hokuriku Electric Power, among other initiatives to expand renewables, increased the biomass co-firing ratio at some of its thermal power plants.
