Shizuoka Gas & Power will expand the 32.6MW Fuji Power Plant in Fuji City, Shizuoka Prefecture, to 48.2MW by adding two gas engines, the company said on July 29, 2025.
According to the statement, the Shizuoka Gas subsidiary plans to begin construction in the winter of 2025 and commission the two 7.8MW Kawasaki Heavy Industries units within FY2027.
The expansion is part of the company’s efforts to secure stable power supply and lower procurement costs by increasing its generation self-sufficiency ratio. Shizuoka Gas & Power plans to sell the output to local customers through its retail plans and also participate with the asset in the balancing market and the capacity market.
Fuji Power Plant was commissioned in 2016 with two gas engines and two gas differential pressure power generation units totaling 17MW. In late 2023, its capacity was expanded by 15.6MW to 32.6MW using the same Kawasaki Heavy engines as planned for the upcoming expansion.
Separately from operating the gas power plant, Shizuoka Gas & Power has also been increasingly involved in renewables. It holds stakes in multiple biomass assets including a JAPEX-led 50MW project in Tahara City, Aichi Prefecture, and partnered with Winfield Japan on solar development earlier this year. The company was also awarded a subsidy for a 13MW/46.9MWh grid-scale BESS in Shizuoka City, which it plans to commission in FY2027.
