Shizuoka Gas & Power will develop its first grid-scale battery storage facility, a 13MW/46.9MWh project on the premises of Shizuoka Gas’s Shizuoka Branch, the company’s parent Shizuoka Gas announced on December 25, 2024.
“By entering the grid storage battery business, Shizuoka Gas & Power will strengthen its own balancing capabilities and contribute to the stable supply of power and the further spread of renewable energy,” said the company’s statement.
According to the statement, the project, which will be located in the Chubu TSO area, was awarded METI’s FY2024 subsidy for the introduction of grid-scale storage on December 23, 2024. Shizuoka Gas & Power aims to start construction in 2025 and commission the facility in FY2027.
The project will use lithium-ion batteries, however, the equipment supplier and engineering, construction, and procurement (EPC) contractor have not been disclosed at this point.
While this project marks Shizuoka Gas’s entry into the battery storage business, the company has already been involved in the development of renewable generation assets and, according to the Japan Energy Hub PPA database, has signed at least one off-site corporate PPA.
