Sun Village and Marubeni Power Retail launched a turnkey grid-scale battery storage asset development and operation solution, the companies announced on July 24, 2025. They aim to contract 100MW of projects under the new service within 2025.
According to the statement, Sun Village will handle project development including site identification and acquisition, and grid connection application. It will also be in charge of engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC), and operation and maintenance (O&M). Marubeni Power Retail will aggregate the assets once operational and also support trial operation and coordination with grid operators.
In the future, the companies also plan to partner with financial institutions and insurance companies, among others to expand the scope of services offered under their one-stop solution.
Sun Village has been focusing its efforts on developing and building 2MW/8MWh-scale high-voltage facilities. It signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with Huawei and Sungrow to procure 500MWh of BESS from each. It also partnered with companies such as Mitsubishi HC Capital Energy, Nippon Chikudenchi, and Japan Infrastructure Fund Advisors to develop projects on their behalf.
Marubeni Power Retail commissioned its first grid-scale BESS, a 2MW/8MWh project in Nagano Prefecture, in October 2024. The group is also developing a 25MW/104MWh project in Hokkaido, which it plans to commission within FY2025.
While the companies have been active in BESS independently, Marubeni Power Retail and Sun Village formed a capital and business alliance aimed at growing their non-FIT solar businesses in 2024. As part of the partnership, the Marubeni unit invested 2 billion yen in the Tochigi-based developer and EPC.
Sun Village and Marubeni join a growing list of major energy players launching turnkey grid-scale BESS development and operation services, including NTT Anode Energy and Kansai Electric Power.
