Sun Village and ML Power, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mizuho Lease, agreed to jointly build and operate a 2MW/8MWh high-voltage grid-scale BESS in the Hokuriku TSO area, the former announced on January 20, 2025.
The companies expect the project, which was developed by Sun Village and will be located in Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture, to be commissioned in October 2025. According to the statement, “a joint venture set up by ML Power is expected to operate [the asset] in capacity, wholesale, and balancing markets.”
While Sun Village has been increasingly active in grid-scale BESS development, this is its first such project in the Hokuriku TSO area. In September 2024, it sold three similarly sized projects in the Chubu TSO area to JA Mitsui Lease while remaining involved as the projects’ EPC contractor. In November 2024, it signed an agreement with HD Renewable Energy to jointly develop 13 high-voltage BESS projects in Tokyo and Chubu.
“We are developing and constructing grid-scale BESS facilities not only in northern Kanto but also throughout the country and will contribute to the growth of renewable energy by targeting to develop 250 storage plants (total output of 500MW) in the future,” said Sun Village’s statement.
