On November 30, 2024, Hokuriku Electric Power increased Tsuruga Thermal Power Station Unit 2’s biomass co-firing ratio to 15%, the company announced in December 2024.

Hokuriku EPCO started co-firing woody biomass in the 700MW unit in September 2007. However, until the recent increase, the co-firing ratio was limited to approximately 1%. With the increased ratio, biomass generation at the power plant is expected to reach 750GWh per year.

The coal-fired Tsuruga Thermal Power Station was commissioned in 1991 when its 500MW Unit 1 was put into service. Unit 2 followed in September 2000.
