Vena Energy and Quantum Mesh agreed to work together on promoting the development of edge AI data centers in Japan in a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on February 14, 2025.

“We will integrate Vena’s renewable energy and green infrastructure business with our innovative immersion cooling technology, enabling the development of high-efficiency, low-environmental-impact edge data centers,” said Hiroyuki Shinohara, Chief Executive Officer at Quantum Mesh. The data centers could be co-located with Vena-developed power plants or partially powered by its off-site projects, the companies said.

The companies did not disclose a timeline or capacity targets for the partnership.

Founded in 2023, Quantum Mesh focuses on the development and operation of edge data centers. Its first data center, “Takahama Drip 1,” in Fukui Prefecture, commenced operations in December 2024.

Vena Energy operates a portfolio of over 30 solar and two wind power plants in Japan with further projects under development. Most recently, it started the environmental impact assessment process for an up to 40MW onshore wind project in Iwaki city, Fukushima Prefecture, which it eyes commissioning in 2032. In addition to developing renewable assets, Vena is also involved in approximately 1GW of data center projects around Asia-Pacific.

Like in other markets, growth in data center capacity is expected to lead to an increase in Japan’s overall power demand. The country’s grid coordinator OCCTO expects annual data center-related power consumption to reach 3TWh in FY2025 and grow nearly 15-fold to 44TWh in FY2034. Data center-related peak demand is expected to reach 560MW in FY2025 and grow to over 6GW in FY2034.
