JA Mitsui Energy Solutions and Osaka Gas will develop a 22MW/95MWh grid-scale battery storage project in Sukagawa City, Fukushima Prefecture, the companies announced on June 11, 2026.
According to the statement, the project is expected to be commissioned in FY2028. It will use lithium-ion battery systems. The project is led by JA Mitsui Leasing Group, which will support fundraising and manage the asset once operational. Osaka Gas will serve as the aggregator, participating with the facility in the wholesale, balancing, and capacity markets.
The project is owned through the special purpose company (SPC) Sukagawa Chikudensho LLC. The two partners’ ownership interests have not been disclosed.
JA Mitsui Energy Solutions, through its SPC JMES BESS ONE LLC, previously acquired three 1.99MW/7.4MWh projects in the Chubu TSO area from Sun Village. Its parent company JA Mitsui Leasing invested in five SPARX Group-led projects totaling 230MW/812.3MWh, including the most recently announced SGET Aso Power Storage Station in Kumamoto Prefecture.
Osaka Gas targets a 1GW portfolio of grid-scale and co-located battery storage projects at the final investment decision (FID) or later stage by FY2030, including owned and third-party assets under aggregation. The company holds stakes in the operational 11MW/23MWh Senri Power Storage Station and 2MW/8MWh Takeo Power Storage Station and the under-construction 25MW/50MWh Kamiosatsu Power Storage Station.
Sukagawa Power Storage Station is the two partners’ first joint grid-scale battery storage project. They have been collaborating on solar, including by being among the sponsors of Japan’s most recently listed Green Light Renewable Energy Infrastructure Fund.
