Banpu Japan will install PowerX battery systems at two METI-subsidized extra high-voltage projects it is developing in Fukushima and Miyazaki prefectures.

According to PowerX’s statement from June 5, 2025, each facility will be 26MW/109MWh and comprise 40 lithium-ion Mega Power containerized units. Both assets are scheduled for 2028 commissioning.

The Fukushima Minyu Shimbun previously reported that the Fukushima project will be built in Aizuwakamatsu City and cost approximately 6 billion yen. It was awarded about 2 billion yen through METI’s FY2024 subsidy for grid-scale storage facility construction. The Miyazaki project won approximately the same amount in the same year, with Fuyo General Lease and Global Engineering listed as co-applicants.

Separately from the two projects, Banpu Japan also built a 14.5MW/58MWh project in Iwate Prefecture using Tesla BESS, which was set to be commissioned in June 2025 according to The Nikkei report.

PowerX was established in March 2021. Since then, its Okayama-manufactured Mega Power units have become one of the most widely used systems in grid-scale storage projects in Japan. The deal with Banpu highlights the company’s expansion from a focus on high-voltage, 2MW/8MWh projects to the extra high-voltage market. It follows orders from Tokyo Century and JFE Engineering for a 20MW/79MWh project and from Kamigumi for a 13MW/55MWh one.
