Banpu to develop 26MW grid-scale BESS facility in Fukushima Prefecture, plans January 2028 COD

Banpu Japan is developing multiple BESS projects.

Thai energy company Banpu’s Japan subsidiary will develop a 26MW grid-scale BESS facility in Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture, The Fukushima Minyu Shimbun reported on December 26, 2024.

According to the report, Banpu Japan plans to begin construction of the facility in the Tohoku TSO area in April 2025 and commission it in January 2028.

The project, which will consisist of 40 containerized units and is expected to cost approximately 6 billion yen according to the report, was one of the 27 projects selected for METI’s FY2024 subsidy for the construction of energy storage systems and the only one in Fukushima Prefecture. It was awarded an approximately 2 billion yen.

Details about the project’s engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor and aggregator have not been disclosed at this point.

Separately from the “Aizuwakamatsu Power Storage Station,” Banpu Japan, alongside partners Fuyo General Lease and Global Engineering, was awarded a similarly sized subsidy for a project in Miyazaki Prefecture. The company, according to its website, is also developing a 14.5MW BESS facility in Iwate Prefecture.
