Chubu Electric Power began construction of the 21MW Mega Solar Kiso solar power plant in Kiso Town, Nagano Prefecture, on August 7, 2026, the company announced on the same day.

According to the statement, the power plant is being developed on the site of the former Kisokoma Kogen Uyama Country Club golf course and is scheduled to be commissioned in September 2027. It is expected to generate approximately 35GWh per year. The project is owned by the special purpose company (SPC) Mega Solar Kiso LLC, which is wholly held by the utility’s unit CEPCO-R LLC.

At 21MW, Mega Solar Kiso will become the largest solar power plant in Chubu Electric Power’s disclosed portfolio, overtaking the partially-owned 19MW Daigas Oita Mirai Solar in Oita Prefecture and the 18MW Miyako Kuzakai Solar Park in Iwate Prefecture. The utility is also developing several high-voltage projects, including two in Shizuoka Prefecture and three in Iwate Prefecture, and a portfolio of low-voltage assets.

The project in Nagano adds to a limited number of new large-scale solar power plants being built in Japan, where extra high-voltage project development has been increasingly focusing on golf courses, which are seeing decreased profitability due to the aging population and are among the few remaining viable sites. It follows, among others, EDP Renewables’ 35MWAC/44MWDC asset commissioned in Fukushima City in May 2026.
