Cosmo Eco Power begun the environmental impact assessment process for an up to 100MW onshore wind project in Akita Prefecture, the company announced on March 25, 2025.
According to the “document on primary environmental impact consideration” submitted to relevant stakeholders and made available for public viewing, the “Akita Yurihonjo Wind Farm” is expected to consist of 20 to 25 turbines, 4 to 5MW each, spread across an approximately 1,525ha area on the border of Akita and Yurihonjo cities.
Cosmo Eco Power aims to begin construction of the project in 2030 or later, with commissioning planned for 2033 or later.
The company currently has two other projects in the area undergoing environmental assessment. In December 2024, it started the process for an up to 525MW offshore wind project off the coast of Akita City. Its smaller, up to 30MW onshore Akita Mukaihama Wind Farm is in the methodology stage. Cosmo Eco Power’s operational onshore wind portfolio includes 19 assets across Japan with a combined output of over 300MW.
With the area having significant wind generation potential, more than 25 operational assets are scattered around the planned project’s location. Most are small, sub-10MW projects. The three larger ones include the 54.6MW Akita Port Offshore Wind Power Plant, Eurus Energy’s 18MW Akita Port Wind Farm, and J-Wind’s 16.1MW Yurihonjo Kaigan Wind Power Plant.
The area is also home to one of the offshore wind areas awarded in Japan’s first offshore wind auction and a number of other under development projects including Renova’s 60 to 106MW Yurihonjo Iwaki, Eurus Energy’s up to 50MW Sasamoriyama, and JR-EAST Energy Development’s up to 42MW Yuri Oouchi Wind Farm.
