Ecokaku will develop a containerized data center with onsite solar generation and battery storage in Omitama City, Ibaraki Prefecture, the company announced on November 2, 2026.
According to the statement, the data center will have approximately 2MW of grid connection and 1.2MW to 1.3MW of IT capacity. It will be paired with a 2MWDC solar plant and a 2MW/4MWh battery storage system, which are expected to supply about 30% of the facility’s annual power consumption. The project is scheduled to begin operation in May 2028.
Construction of the energy-related facilities will be subsidized under the Ministry of the Environment’s FY2026 data center decarbonization support scheme, which covers up to a third of eligible expenses with a 1 billion yen cap. Results published by the program’s administrator show that Ecokaku’s project was selected alongside Internet Initiative Japan’s plan to retrofit an existing facility in Shimane Prefecture.
The Omitama project is expected to follow Ecokaku’s first planned data center in Okuma Town, Fukushima Prefecture, which was selected for an earlier subsidy from the ministry. The facility is scheduled to start operation by the spring of 2027.
Based in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture, Ecokaku was primarily active in solar development before expanding into grid-scale battery storage. The company said it now wants to utilize its experience in the two industries to combine renewables and data centers.
