EDP Renewables APAC will develop a 28MWDC solar power plant in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture, and operate it under a long-term PPA with an undisclosed technology firm, the company announced on April 8, 2026.
According to the statement, the Motoyoshi Solar Farm project is expected to be commissioned in early 2028 and generate about 33GWh annually. It will comprise about 42,000 panels spread across 48ha.
The project follows a 35MWAC/44MWDC solar power plant in Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture, which was expected to be commissioned in August 2025, with aggregation handled by ENGIE Energy Marketing Japan and output sold to Amazon under a 20-year PPA. EDP said that it currently has a development pipeline of over 500MWDC in Japan.
Technology companies have been among the most active in signing PPAs in the country. Japan Energy Hub’s database shows that Amazon has secured at least 184MW across nine deals, Google at least 130MW across three deals, and Microsoft at least 100MW across four deals.
