GATES plans to develop and bring online six high-voltage grid-scale battery storage projects by the end of 2027, the company announced on July 27, 2026.
According to the statement, four of the assets will be located in the Chubu TSO area, including two in Iiyama City, Nagano Prefecture, and one each in Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture, and Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The remaining two projects will be built in Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and Kamijima Town, Ehime Prefecture, in the Hokuriku and Shikoku areas, respectively.
Capacities of the six planned assets were not disclosed. However, similar high-voltage assets tend to be sized just below the 2MW extra-high-voltage threshold, with durations of about four hours.
The company said it plans to use the data gathered through the development and operation of the projects to improve its grid-scale battery storage project sales platform and to provide consulting services to businesses considering entering the sector.
In March 2026, the company disclosed a memorandum of understanding with Kansai Electric Power to explore a potential grid-scale battery storage partnership, combining its real estate expertise with the utility’s energy business know-how. It is unclear whether the latter is involved in the planned projects.
Founded in 2012, GATES has focused on building a platform for investment real estate transactions and has also been active in the secondary trading of solar power plants.
