Looop-affiliated special purpose company taMEL LLC commissioned its first grid-scale battery storage project, a 2MW/7.68MWh facility in Ogawa Town, Saitama Prefecture, on February 21, 2025, the company announced on April 3, 2025.
According to the statement, the “Saitama Prefecture Hiki District Power Storage Station” is already being used for trading in the wholesale market. Looop will serve as the project’s aggregator and use the asset for trading in balancing and capacity markets in the future.
Construction of the project, which started in October 2023, received support from Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s FY2023 subsidy for grid-scale BESS projects. The company was awarded about 348 million yen.
Looop’s wholly-owned subsidiary Looop Community will be in charge of asset management, said the company in an email response to Japan Energy Hub. Looop holds an 85.1% interest in taMEL LLC through tokumei kumiai (silent partnership).
The company plans to further expand its business across the value chain in the future. “Looop will continue to accumulate grid-scale battery storage-related know-how and consider … undertaking development, EPC, maintenance, and operation contracts in the future,” said the company when first announcing the Saitama project in September 2023.
