Construction work on Shikoku Electric Power’s fourth floating solar power plant started on November 1, 2024, the company announced.

The 1.5MW Taniike Floating Solar Power Plant situated on a reservoir in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, will be operated by Shikoku EPCO’s wholly-owned subsidiary Yonden Solar LLC. It is expected to be commissioned in September 2025 and generate approximately 2GWh annually after that.

Shikoku EPCO currently has three operational floating solar power plants. In July 2022, it commissioned the 750kW Haseike Floating Solar Power Plant in Sanuki City, Kagawa Prefecture. In November 2023, Shikoku EPCO begun constructing the 1.99MW Hazama Kamiike Floating Solar Power Plant and the 200kW Hazama Nakaike Floating Solar Power Plant on adjacent reservoirs in Takamatsu, both of which it commissioned in September 2024.

With land available for solar power plant development in Japan getting scarcer, companies have been looking at alternatives including installations on reservoirs. Earlier this year, multiple PPAs involving such floating solar power plants have been announced including one between Kansai Electric Power and Keihan Holdings.
