Austria-based enspired plans to enter Japan as its first market outside of Europe, the battery storage optimizer announced on October 13, 2025.

According to the statement, the company will expand into the country in partnership with Banpu NEXT, which is one of its investors and has been active in developing grid-scale storage in Japan. The move follows the Thai company and several other investors’ increase of enspired’s Series B from €25.5 million secured in 2024 to over €40 million.

“We are confident that this partnership will strengthen our BESS portfolio and energy trading business while reinforcing our strategy of AI integration in our solutions to drive smarter, more reliable, and sustainable energy systems,” said Banpu NEXT’s CEO Smittipon Srethapramote.

enspired was founded in 2020 and has contracted about 1.2GW/2GWh of BESS around Europe to date, including over 400MW of operational assets. The company offers a range of services across the risk spectrum, including tolling and fully merchant operation, as well as floor contracts with and without caps.

Banpu NEXT commissioned its first grid-scale project in Japan, the 14.5MW/58MWh Tono Power Storage Station in Iwate Prefecture, in June 2025, and has multiple others, including a 26MW/104MWh facility in Fukushima Prefecture and another of the same-scale in Miyazaki Prefecture, under development. The Thai company said it aims to grow its portfolio in the country to over 1GWh by 2030.

The Vienna-based company follows several optimizers with experience trading batteries in Europe, such as GridBeyond, Engelhart CTP, and Second Foundation, interested in leveraging know-how from other regions in Japan’s growing battery storage market.
