TEPCO Renewable Power resumed commercial operation of its Tashirogawa No. 2 Power Station in Hayakawa Town, Yamanashi Prefecture, on July 22, 2026, following refurbishment works, the company announced the next day.

According to the statement, the hydropower plant’s two units were shut down in February 2024 and underwent turbine and generator replacement. The utility said the refurbishment increased the asset’s capacity by 670kW, from 22.7MW to 23.37MW. Unit 1 accounts for 11.67MW of the total and Unit 2 for 11.7MW.

METI data shows the repowering project was certified under the feed-in-tariff (FIT) scheme in FY2021, when hydropower plants between 5MW and 30MW reusing existing conduits were eligible for 20-year, 12-yen-per-kWh contracts. The certification lists the asset at 23.9MW, about 530kW above the capacity disclosed by the utility.

Tashirogawa No. 2 Power Station was first commissioned in November 1928 and is the 34th hydropower plant TEPCO Renewable Power has refurbished. The project follows the June 2026 restart of the 15.8MW Komahashi Power Station Unit 3, also in Yamanashi Prefecture, and the repowering of the 4.74MW Tokorono No. 3 Power Station in Tochigi Prefecture.

In total, TEPCO Renewable Power operates 163 hydropower plants with a combined capacity of 9.8GW. With many of the assets aging, like other utilities, the company has been gradually modernizing the fleet.
