The area off the coast of Akita City is already home to multiple wind projects.

On December 20, 2024, Cosmo Eco Power submitted a planning stage “document on primary environmental impact consideration” for an up to 525MW fixed-bottom offshore wind project it is developing off the coast of Akita City, Akita Prefecture.

According to the submitted document, the company plans to build between 27 and 35 turbines across a 5,538 ha area along the coast of Akita City, each between 15MW and 20MW. In case Cosmo Eco Power opts for 27 20MW turbines, it plans to limit their output to 525MW. No specific timeline was provided for the “Akita City Offshore Power Generation” project. However, the company expects the project’s construction to take approximately two years.

Currently, there are over 20 operational onshore and offshore wind projects around the area of Cosmo Eco Power’s planned project. While the majority of those is under 10MW, there are four larger scale projects: A-WIND Katagami Wind Power Plant (39.95MW, commissioned in 2020); Akita Katagami Wind Farm (65.99MW, commissioned in 2020); Akita Port Offshore Wind Power Plant (54.6MW, commissioned in 2003); and Eurus Akita Port Wind Farm (18MW, commissioned in 2015).

Three more projects planned in the area (up to 315MW, 910MW, and 106MW, respectively) are currently going through the environmental impact assessment process.
