ENGIE and EDP Renewables APAC signed a partnership to cooperate on expanding their renewable energy-related business in Japan, the former announced on October 18, 2024.
As part of the collaboration, ENGIE Energy Marketing Japan will support EDP Renewables APAC’s power trading and risk management in the country. “Our joint efforts will focus on Power Purchase Agreements, balancing services, optimizing energy production and consumption, and maximizing the value of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS),” said ENGIE’s statement published on LinkedIn.
ENGIE started trading physical power in Japan in late 2023 when it opened its Tokyo office after serving clients in the market remotely.
EDPR Japan, EDP Renewables APAC’s Japan subsidiary, was established in 2014 as RE CAPITAL. Earlier this year, its parent announced plans to invest approximately 20 billion yen to develop over 200MW of renewable assets in Japan by 2026 including solar power plants and BESS facilities. It is currently working on a 44MW project in Fukushima Prefecture that it plans to commission in the third quarter of next year.
The two companies also collaborate on offshore wind in Japan through their joint venture Ocean Winds, which is a member of the Japan’s Floating Offshore Wind Group established in 2020 together with five other companies.
