
On December 26, 2024, JERA-led Oga Katagami Akita Offshore Green Energy submitted a draft of the environmental impact assessment for the 315MW project off the coast of Akita Prefecture it was awarded in Japan’s second offshore wind auction. The following day, it announced a deal with Vestas to supply turbines for the project.
The JERA-led consortium, which also includes J-POWER, Itochu, and Tohoku Electric Power, is targeting a June 30, 2028, COD for the project located off the coast of Oga, Katagami, and Akita cities. According to the environmental impact assessment document, it plans to start construction in March 2027 and run trial operations between July 2027 and June 2028.
Oga Katagami Akita Offshore Green Energy’s Vestas order includes 21 V236-15.0 MW turbines along with a long-term support with their operation and maintenance. “This marks … our first firm order for a project to be developed under the Japanese government’s offshore wind auctions based on the Renewable Energy Sea Area Utilization Act,” said Vestas’s statement.
The consortium started the environmental impact assessment process for the project in January 2023 by submitting a planning stage “document on primary environmental impact consideration.” In July 2023, it submitted a draft of environmental impact assessment methodology.
