Sustech will develop rooftop solar projects under onsite PPAs with Marusugi and use their surplus output for a virtual PPA with Hokuhoku Financial Group, the company announced on September 8, 2026.
According to the statement, about 375MWh of the power plants’ annual output will be consumed onsite by the steel trading company under 20-year or longer contracts. Non-fossil certificates linked to an additional 1.16GWh annually will be sold to Hokuhoku Financial Group under a 20-year virtual PPA, with Sustech acting as the aggregator and selling the power in the wholesale market.
Hokuhoku Financial Group previously signed two other virtual PPAs with Sustech, securing environmental value for its subsidiaries The Hokuriku Bank and The Hokkaido Bank in March 2025 and May 2026, respectively.
Japan Energy Hub’s PPA database shows the developer also disclosed, among others, a 3GWh-per-year virtual PPA with JR Kyushu, a solar carport onsite PPA with Lotte Real Estate, and a rooftop solar onsite PPA with Kameda Seika.
Combining onsite PPAs with virtual PPAs allows developers to maximize the utilization of available rooftop space even at facilities with limited power consumption instead of requiring them to size power plants to the host site’s demand.
