Clean Energy Connect specializes in developing portfolios of small-scale solar power plants.

Sugi Holdings expanded its off-site PPA with Clean Energy Connect to cover additional 22 Sugi Drug Stores in the Kanto area, the solar developer said on March 18, 2025.

According to the statement, Clean Energy Connect will build 32 additional low-voltage solar power plants, all in the Kanto area. When fully operational, the PPA will supply 65 stores from 62 power plants including those developed as part of the original agreement announced in April 2024. The stores’ consumption not covered by the PPA will be covered by Smart Eco Energy’s “Ecology” renewable power retail plan.

In addition to Clean Energy Connect, Sugi Holdings also signed an off-site PPA with Chubu Electric Power Miraiz. Under the agreement, power from a 450kW solar asset in Mie Prefecture has been supplied to 10 stores in Aichi Prefecture since March 29, 2024. In February 2023, former Kokan Techno (now Kowa Optronics) and NTT Smile started installing rooftop solar at Sugi branches as part of on-site PPAs expected to supply about 7.8GWh across 113 stores in Kanto, Chubu, and Kansai areas.

Clean Energy Connect has been focused on developing low-voltage solar power plants not subsidized through the feed-in-tariff (FIT) scheme. As of early February 2025, its operational portfolio reached 2,000 assets with a combined output of over 175MWDC. It is monetizing the power plants through PPAs of varying size, including 70MWDC-scale deals with NTT Anode EnergyAmazon, and Google.
