Tama Business Enterprise will develop two 1.99MW grid-scale battery storage projects at its Hachioji Plant in Hachioji City, Tokyo, Nippon Steel Engineering announced on August 20, 2026.

According to the statement, the Nippon Steel unit supported assessing the projects’ feasibility and was contracted to aggregate the assets once operational. The facilities, Tama Business Enterprise Hachioji Plant No. 1 and No. 2 Power Storage Stations, are expected to be commissioned around December 2026. Their energy capacity was not disclosed, but similar projects and the market environment suggest they might be about 8MWh each.

Both of the projects were awarded subsidies under Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s FY2025 program for supporting grid-scale battery storage, with Nippon Steel Engineering acting as a co-applicant alongside Tama Business Enterprise. They secured 300.6 million yen and 294.4 million yen, respectively.

Hachioji Plant No. 1 and No. 2 Power Storage Stations mark the crushed stone producer’s entry into grid-scale battery storage. They follow a 1.73MW feed-in-tariff (FIT) solar power plant completed at the production facility in 2022 and an approximately 500kW system installed for self-consumption at the site in 2023. METI data shows Tama Business Enterprise also owns several smaller solar projects in Gifu Prefecture.

The deal is Nippon Steel Engineering’s first disclosed grid-scale battery storage aggregation contract. The company previously secured agreements to optimize hybrid solar-plus-storage assets, such as SMFL Mirai Partners’ Aoyagi Solar Park I.
